Northland, Beloit start up action yesterday

Both Northland and Beloit got their seasons started on Sunday in Florida. The Buccaneers of Beloit split a doubleheader with Webster University. Northland dropped a 10-3 decision to Drew University.

Junior Alex Norman was the star of the day for Beloit, throwing a complete game shut out in the front half of the double header. Norman struck out two and walked none and didn't allow a Gorlock runner to reach second base after the first inning.

The offense could only manage three runs but that was plenty with Norman on the hill. Mike Ross provided the offense with two doubles and two runs.

In game two, Beloit battled back in the seventh inning for two runs to tie the score at five, but Webster would go on to win in extra innings, 9-5. Jake Tressmer had three hits in the ball game and Ross added two more to lead the Bucs offense.

Northland College struggled offensively and defensively in their 10-3 loss to Drew.

Freshmen Brandon Bodart has a fine debut to his collegiate pitching career but was hurt by errors and walks. He went seven innings and allowed just four hits and struck out five, but he walked five and allowed six runs (three earned).

Shortstop Casey Herr was the lone bright spot offensively with two hits and two runs.
