Game(s) of the Week: Stevens Point Pointers Vs. Edgewood College Eagles

Edgewood College has live video tomorrow, so be sure to blow off work and watch the game at your desk! Video: http://bit.ly/EagleTV Live Stats: http://www.sidearmsports.com/edgewood/baseball/

Preview:
For the third consecutive week, the Wisconsin College Baseball Network (WCBN) Game of the Week features a private school from Wisconsin taking on one of the public schools.

The Edgewood Eagles started off the season with five wins in six games before losing the final three games of their Florida Spring Break trip to sit at 5-4. The Stevens Point Pointers went 6-3 on their opening trip to Florida, but couldn't help but be a little disappointed as they were ranked as high as number two in the country.

Now sitting at #9 the Pointers will look to beat a quality in region opponent in Edgewood as they prepare for the WIAC Schedule.

Edgewood will also open up conference play in the NAC this weekend but hopes to gain some momentum by beating what many consider the top team in the state of Wisconsin for Division III.

"UW-Stevens Point has won all 13 meetings over Edgewood College in the history of the two teams. Last year, the Eagles pushed the 22nd-ranked Pointers to the limit losing a pair of one-run games 2-1 and 5-4."

Results:
In short, the Pointers put away any question whether they should be mentioned with the top teams in the country. UWSP won game one 14-4 and won game two 19-1 in an amazing 34 hit performance in just 14 innings.

In game one, the Pointers got multi RBI games from five different players. Justin Jirschele led the way with three while Jared Surman, Max Mittelstaedt, Kevin Thomas and Steve Consadine all knocked in two. Cody Koback and Jirschele scored four runs in the ball game.

On the hill, Scott Williams went the distance allowing three earned (four total) while striking out eight in seven innings.

Ryan Walker led the Edgewood attack with a 2-4 performance.

Game two featured a 20 hit performance from Point that saw them score in six out of seven innings. The Pointers got three-hit performances from four players (Douglas, Koback, Jirschele and Jordan Rennicke). Douglas also walked six times to reach base in all six of his at bat.

Douglas and Koback each scored five runs in the game while Koback also knocked in five RBI. Joel Delorit got the win pitching five innings and allowing just three hits and zero runs.

MVP: Cody Koback had a huge day for Point scoring nine runs, knocking in five RBI on four hits, stealing three bases and hitting two triples.

Records: UWSP 8-3 and Edgewood College 5-6

Platteville Drops a Heartbreaker to Loras Fall to 1-9
Host Loras rallied from a two-run deficit in the eighth for a 9-7 win over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneers (1-9) had built a 7-5 advantage over the first seven innings with nine hits, including two each from Aaron Hopson and Brad Milka. UW-Platteville elected to before the game to use many of the arms in its arsenal with seven different pitchers taking to the mound.

Loras (6-9) spread eight hits among seven players but it was a three-RBI double by Austin Brown in the bottom of the eighth that put them in front for the first time on the afternoon. Travis Olson followed that up with an insurance run on a RBI single, scoring Brown.

UW-Platteville got on the board in the top of the first on a grand slam by Brett Benesh that took advantage of two walks and a Loras error for the early 4-0 lead.

Loras cut into the lead in its half to the first with a RBI double to trim the lead to 4-1. The Pioneers got the run back in the third on a RBI groundout by Trevor Kattre to score Hopson, who had reached on an error earlier in the inning.

With a 5-1 lead, the Duhawks tied it in the fourth with a four-run inning. Two of the four came on a two-RBI single and the other two came on a two-run home run by Kyle Soeder.

With the game tied at 5, the Pioneers came back with two more in its half of the fifth on a RBI groundout by Benesh and a RBI single by Kattre to put UW-Platteville back in front by a 7-5 margin.

The Pioneers stranded five runners over the next three innings in an attempt to extend the lead. However, it was the Duhawks who came back with a threat and the come-from-behind effort when they scored four times in the bottom of the eighth for the comeback win.

For the Pioneers, Davis Lenzen was the losing pitcher to fall to 0-2 on the season. He struck out three, gave up two hits and allowed four unearned runs in the process. For the Duhawks, Spencer Radabaugh evened his record to 1-1, pitching the final 1 1/3 for Loras.

The Titans finished their trip with the best record of any team in the state at 9-1, making a strong case to move to number one in next weeks edition of the state rankings.

Oshkosh Shuts Out Western Connecticut Behind Strong Effort from Rubens
Jeremy Rubens proved that he is all the way back from last year's Tommy John surgery as he hurled a six hit complete game shut out to defeat Western Connecticut State 6-0. Rubens struck out eight batters and didn't allow a walk.
Offensively, catcher Alex Mullendore led the way. He had three of the Titans 11 hits, drove in a run and scored another. Doug Beattie was the only other Titan with a multi-hit game as he went 2-3.
Titans Also Beat Otterbeing Convincingly
Oshkosh used another complete game to win their second match-up of the day, 11-2 over Otterbein University. This time, Big Ten transfer Phil Schreiber went the distance allowing two earned runs on eight hits. He struck out four batters and also walked none.

Carroll Falls Twice to Colby, Still Winless
The Pioneers lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Colby College Mules by scores of 9-7 and 7-5.

Carroll completes the Florida end of the schedule 0-8 as they head back north to try and make something out of their season. Definitely a tough start for first year head coach Derek Hassell.

Game of the Week: Carroll University Pioneers vs. Oshkosh Titans

Preview:
Our third Game of the Week featured yet another intra-Wisconsin battle. This time the Carroll University Pioneers faced off with the UW-Oshkosh Titans. Like I said last time, "When the private schools get a chance to do battle with one of the UW schools it is always a big deal, with a little extra pride on the line."

Sam Mulkey was on the hill for Carroll, while Sean Grabig toed the rubber for Oshkosh.

Result:
Looking at the stats and numbers coming into the game would lead you to believe that Oshkosh would win this game running away.

Carroll has struggled mightily on the season, going winless in five games and honestly never really even being in a game. Oshkosh, on the other hand, has recovered strongly from an opening day loss to Carthage beating the College of Wooster four consecutive times.

Although Oshkosh did win the game, it took a late rally to do so as the Carroll Pioneers came out to play.

The Pioneers out hit the Titans 14-9 in the game and struck for the first runs, holding a 2-0 leading after 2 1/2. After Oshkosh scored two in both the third and fourth innings, the Pioneers responded with a three spot to hold a 5-4 lead in the fifth.

That lead would last all the way until the seventh when Oshkosh tied it with a single run. In the bottom of the eighth, the Titans broke the game open with a four spot to put the score at 9-5 where the game would end.

Mulkey ended up pitching all eight innings for Carroll allowing seven earned runs and striking out two. Grabig's day was no better for Oshkosh as he lasted just 4.1 innings giving up five earned on ten hits. Troy Mrkvicka was strong in relief finishing the final 4.2 innings to pick up the win while not allowing a run on only four hits.

For Carroll, Jordan Stephans and Drew Volkman led the upset attempt with three hits and an RBI each. Dan O'Brien brought in two RBI.

Oshkosh was led by Kyle Van Abel who had four hits including two doubles. He also drove in four runs. Nolan Fadness was not far behind with two hits and three RBI.

Oshkosh has never lost to Carroll University as they are now 5-0 in the All-Time Series.

FINAL: Oshkosh 9 Carrol 5

Game MVP: Kyle Van Abel - 3B - Oshkosh Titans: 4-5, Four RBI, Two Doubles

Records: Carroll: 0-6 Oshkosh: 5-1 since moved to 6-1

Platteville Swept in St. Louis by Wash U
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team dropped a doubleheader to host Washington University-St. Louis, 12-0 and 5-3 on a chilly Friday afternoon in St. Louis.

The Bears outhit the Pioneers by an 18 to 7 margin in the doubleheader sweep, including holding UW-Platteville to just one hit in the nightcap.

Washington University-St. Louis (13-11) got a complete game shutout from Taylor Berman, who raised his record to 3-0 in the process.

The Bears scored four times in both the first and fifth inning and twice in the second and fourth as well as capitalized on nine walks by Pioneer pitching in the win.

The Pioneers' Trevor Kattre paced a UW-Platteville attack with two hits in the loss for his fourth multi-hit game of the season.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers again were done in by first inning damage by the Bears. Washington University raced out to a 3-0 opening the frame.

UW-Platteville got on the board in its half of the second when after back-to-back walks to start the inning, Brad Milka drove in Demmon to cut the deficit to 3-1.

However, the Bears plated two more when they capitalized on a pair of UW-Platteville errors in its half of the inning to stretch the lead to 5-1.

The Pioneers rallied for two runs without a single hit in the fourth to cut into the Bears lead. To begin the inning, the Pioneers loaded the bases on three-straight walks which prompted a pitching change. Next, back-to-back RBI fielder's choices by Tyler Jacobson and Brad Milka cut the deficit to 5-3.

Out of the bullpen, in relief of starter Trevor Hall, Pioneers' Shane Murphy and Grant Oldenburg pitched the final 5 1/3, giving up just four hits and allowed just an unearned run for UW-Platteville.

Oshkosh Gets Win over College of Wooster
For already the fourth time on the season, Oshkosh defeated the College of Wooster by a score of 17-1.

Matt Wells went the distance on the mound for the Titans striking out five and only allow five hits in earning the victory.

The story of the game was the Titans offense. Derek Hiroskey was the star of the game, as he went 6-6 with six RBI, three runs and two doubles. Jake Dostalek and Derek Layton each chipped in three hits. Alex Mullendore hit a solo home run as well for the Titans.

Oshkosh also played Carroll college yesterday. Check that game out in our Game of the Week section!

Pointers Defeat Southern Maine, Lose to St. Olaf
Stevens Point split a pair of games to move to 6-3 on the Florida slate of their schedule.

No box score is available for the 12-4 victory over Southern Maine.

In the game two loss to St. Olaf, the Pointers surrendered seven runs in the seventh to eventually lose 10-6. The Pointers were able to get 11 hits in the game, but could not make the most of their opportunities.

Dan Douglas led the charge with three hits while Justin Jirschele  and Jared Surman each added two hits.

Stevens Point surprisingly struggled on the hill with Eric Van Beck, Cody Koback and Ryan Iverson all having troubles.

Weather is absolutely killing the baseball schedule right now. Hopefully we can get the sun out before schedules get too far behind!

Wisconsin College Baseball Rankings by Division (1,2, NAIA and JUCO)

The first edition of the Wisconsin College Baseball Network rankings are out. With apologies to all the Divisions except D3, these rankings will be more of an update on how the team is doing. In D3, the teams will be ranked based on our opinion. Enjoy!
Division 1
Record: 3-13
UWM has struggled mightily out of the gates. After dropping three out of four to the Ohio Bobcats, the Panthers sit at 3-13 on the season. Doug Dekoning has been the lone bright spot for the team as he is hitting an amazing .452 on the season with an equally impressive 1.208 OPS.

Division 2

Record 5-8
The Parkside Rangers are on a four game winning streak to improve their record from 1-8 to 5-8 on the young season. The Rangers swept doubleheaders from the University of Illinois at Springfield and Quincy University. Strong pitching has been the key to the Rangers turnaround as Jack Olson is leading a quality staff that has seen its ERA drop into the five's after being as high as 7.50.

NAIA
1. Viterbo V-Hawks 10-11 (1-2 Conference)
2. Cardinal Stritch Wolves 4-9
The V-Hawks beat out Cardinal Stritch for the top spot in the NAIA rankings this week even though they are just 1-5 in their last six games.  Stritch has found their offensive attack but the pitching has left a lot to be imagined. They will have to improve upon a team ERA of 9.74 if they wish to make any noise this season.

Junior College

1. Madison College WolfPack 7-4
2. Western Technical College Cavaliers 4-7
3. MATC Stormers 1-5

Madison College holds the top spot in our Junior College Rankings. The Western Technical College Cavaliers follow in second place and rounding out the pack is the Milwaukee Area  Technical College Stormers.

Stevens Point Preview

By Nathan Woelfel

Head Coach: Pat Bloom (7th Season)
Last Season: 34-18 (16-8 WIAC)

Key Players:
Eric Fritz (Sr.) INF- Fritz hit an impressive .397 last season with 18 doubles, 7 homeruns and 44 RBI.  He struggled defensively, committing 18 errors. He should be able to continue to have success at the plate. If he can clean up his act in the field, the sky is the limit.

Justin Jirschele (Jr.) INF- While Justin had some solid numbers at the dish (.319 B.A., 4 HR, 54 RBI), it was his defensive play that earned him national recognition last year. Jirschele earned Gold Glove-All America honors at third base from the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2010.

Scott Williams (Jr.) RHP- Williams posted an 11-3 record in 18 appearances for Point a season ago. His strikeout to walk ratio was over 2 to 1. Scott will be an integral part of a rotation that may only be 4 deep.

Key Losses:

Brad Archambeau (OF)- Appeared in 51 games for UWSP in 2010, batting .330 with 7 homeruns and 47 RBI.

Sam Spurney (OF)- Hit .365 while tallying 8 homeruns and 53 RBI . However, his replacement in the outfield should be an upgrade defensively when you take into account his .870 fielding percentage which was the lowest on the team.

Jeremy Richter (INF/OF)-Richter had the second highest batting average on the team last year(.372) while also leading the team in RBI (56) and homeruns (11). The Pointers will be scrambling to replace his big bat in the middle of the order.

Key Prospect:
Cody Koback (Jr.) P/OF-  The coaching staff has high hopes for this young man. An injury kept Koback from being a major contributor to last year’s team, but this year he is expected to be back in the mix. He was honorable mention All-WIAC his freshman year and has the potential to get back to that form.

Outlook:
The Pointers are coming off a very successful season. Though their streak of five consecutive WIAC Tournament Champions was snapped by UW-Whitewater, the Pointers earned their way to an appearance in the D3 College World Series, the fourth trip in school history. This season, Point is ranked second nationally by d3baseball.com in their preseason poll. Head coach Pat Bloom doesn’t feel that the high ranking puts any additional pressure on his team.

“We want our guys to be proud of that recognition," said Bloom. “We worked hard to achieve that status. The only pressure comes from adding unrealistic expectations to a group that can’t handle them.”

UWSP lost a fair percentage of their offensive production with last year’s graduating class. Much of Point’s success will be dictated by their ability to replace it.

“We don’t necessarily try to replace one [player] with another," Bloom said. “We try to fit personnel with what best suits their strengths.”

Bloom stressed the importance of the depth of his roster, while also mentioning that his team doesn’t need star power to succeed.

“We have some great players who are surrounded by a lot of good players”, said Bloom. “Name another top-ten team that has zero pre-season All-Americans but is ranked [as highly].

When it comes to expectations for the season, it is business as usual. Bloom says his team needs to focus on what they can control if they want to continue the program’s success.

“Every program wants to win championships,” Bloom said. “It’s about what you do to attain [them].

Edgewood Stretches Winning Streak to Five with Victory over St. Norbert
In our latest match-up of two Wisconsin teams, the Edgewood College Eagles slugged their way to a 16-7 victory over St. Norbert.

Ryan O'Dell led the Eagles with five hits in six at bats including a double, three runs and three RBI. Joe Gura went 3-4 with a pair of RBI and a run while Jake Zadra also had three hits and drove in three runs.

Miles Mayer picked up the win, pitching five innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five. Marc Ostrowski earned the save pitching the final four innings.

The Green Knights provided some pretty solid offense of their own, including a five hit game from Jordan Powers and a 3-5 game for Jarred Yost that included a home run. However, SNC's pitching and defense let them down as they allowed Edgewood 18 hits and made four errors.

Edgewood improves to 5-1 on the season while St. Norbert drops to 3-5. The Eagles continue to look like a force to be reckoned with this season.

Platteville Falters Late Against Virginia Wesleyan

Game of the Week: Concordia University Wisconsin vs. University of Wisconson La Crosse

Preview:
Our second Game of the Week featured another intra-Wisconsin battle. This time the Falcons of Concordia University battled the Eagles of UW La Crosse. When the private schools get a chance to do battle with one of the UW schools it is always a big deal, with a little extra pride on the line.

The Falcons sent All-Conference pitcher Derrick Pankow to the mound with the hopes of showing UWL that they are a force to be reckoned with.

(Sorry for the lack of Coverage for La Crosse but as of now they do not have stats up for the game. All coverage is courtesy of Concordia's Twitter feed @CUW_Baseball.

Result:
The Eagles jumped on Concordia and Pankow early and often as the lead off hitter set the tone for the game with a triple. He was later brought in to take an early 1-0 lead.

CUW was able to answer in their half of the first with an RBI single from Ryan Schilter to score Matt Mayer. After a scoreless second inning for both teams, La Crosse got to Pankow again for three runs and a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Concordia inched closer scoring two runs on a base hit by Nick Doedens to make the score 4-3. The top of the fifth proved to be the "dagger" in the game as La Crosse put up six runs to take a commanding 10-3 lead and also knock Pankow out of the game.

The inning started off with an error by Concordia immediately followed by four consecutive hits. Pankow got the next two batters to ground out, but couldn't get out of the inning as he surrendered two more hits.

Glen Meyerhofer came in and immediately got out of the fifth with a quick out. In the sixth, after CUW couldn't cut in to the lead, Meyerhofer got two more quick outs before La Crosse burst out for five more runs to take a commanding 15-3 lead.

Both teams got the chance to get reserves in the game for the final few innings.

FINAL: La Crosee 19 CUW 7

Game MVP: The Eagles' offense smashed 24 hits and scored 19 runs. Definitely MVP worthy as a unit!
