Game(s) of the Week - Ripon vs. Edgewood (DH)

Preview:
Our game of the week featured two perennial power teams from Wisconsin, Edgewood and Ripon. The teams did battle in a doubleheader on Sunday in Winter Haven, Fla.

While Ripon has been the stronger of the two programs historically, Edgewood has been on the rise for the past few years. With a win or two over Ripon, the Eagles could make a strong statement that they are among the top level teams in Wisconsin.

Results:
Game 1: Edgewood 4 Ripon 1
Edgewood jumped on Ripon for three runs in the top half of the first inning and never look backed as they earned a 4-1 victory.

Blake O'Brien picked up the win going 4.2 innings allowing zero runs and striking out eight Red Hawks. Relievers Brock McGinn, Blake Hunt and Connor Lenz finished the last 2.1 innings allowing only a single run.

Jason Wierschke was strong for Ripon on the hill striking out seven in six innings of work but a rough first inning was the difference in the game.

No players on either team collected multi-hit games but Scott Ortega scored two runs for Edgewood and Jake Zadra was on base in all three plate appearances collecting a single and two walks.

Game 2: Edgewood 5 Ripon 3
In this game, Ripon jumped out to the quick lead scoring two runs in the top of the first. Edgewood would respond immediately, however, as they put up two of their own in the first and another in the second to take a 3-2 lead.

The Eagles added insurance runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to push their leads to two runs each time and were eventually able to hold off the Red Hawks to secure the sweep.

Glenn Nowell picked up the victory going 5.2 innings and allowing just two earned runs (three total). Brock McGinn shut down the Ripon rally in the sixth and Connor Lenz came in and picked up his second save of the day.

Tom Albrecht went this distance for Ripon, allowing seven hits and five runs in six innings.

Game MVP: The Edgewood Pitching staff.

Records: Edgewood 2-1 Ripon 0-3
